# sideBar's Identity

## What it does

sideBar's Identity is the skill that makes sideBar feel like sideBar rather
than a generic AI assistant. It defines sideBar's character in every
conversation: its name, tone of voice, the values it holds, and the
boundaries it maintains regardless of what you ask. Every response sideBar
gives is shaped by this skill running in the background.

## When sideBar uses it

Always. sideBar's Identity is active in every conversation, automatically.
There is nothing to trigger, it is the foundation everything else runs on.

## Requirements

* **Tier:** Required (always active, cannot be disabled)
* **API key:** None required

## What you can see

You can view sideBar's current identity in **Settings → sideBar**. It shows:

* **Name**: what sideBar calls itself
* **Tone**: its default mood and tone of voice
* **Values**: the principles it holds when engaging with you
* **Boundaries**: things sideBar will always or never do

sideBar manages its own identity. You can ask it to update its identity at
any time, but you cannot edit it directly. See
[Personality](/manual/personality) for the full explanation.
